The eLife Innovation Sprint is a collaborative event where we bring together skilled developers, designers, technologists, researchers, etc to develop technological solutions and prototypes to change the way we share and consume science research. The current science publishing system is slow, expensive, ineffective and closed: most of the research output is locked behind paywalls and difficult to reuse, and contributions of researchers are not credited transparently nor appropriately. At eLife, we believe strongly that open-source technologies can help solve some of these problems. Last year, 62 participants from 9 countries worked on 12 different projects, from plug-ins and web-based tools to designing conceptual shifts in the way we share, review and endorse research (see the [Sprint 2018 summary](https://sprint.elifesciences.org/sprint-2018)). More than half of the projects continued beyond the Sprint, with some developing into fully functional prototypes with the support of eLife and other organisations such as the Mozilla Foundation and the Wellcome Trust. Participants established personal networks and collaborations lasting until today.

Welcome to the 2nd annual Mid-Atlantic Developer Conference! There are many conferences for computer developers in the Mid-Atlantic region, but most of them are highly focused. Javascript, PHP, Ruby, Security, and iOS development to name a few. But few programmers only work in one technology these days, and what happens if your current language or platform is not in the above list?

We decided to fix that by creating a larger scope conference that includes everyone. This polyglot conference will be designed to appeal to all developers from the region and will cover the topics that you want to hear.

**beyond tellerrand** is an independent design and development event established in 2010 and organised by Marc Thiele. Two days with talks about design, technology, development and much more. Networking **in a very friendly and familiar atmosphere** is written in big letters as well. [beyond tellerrand](https://beyondtellerrand.com), the name of my event, is a mix of the English word “beyond” and the German word “Tellerrand”, which is the edge of a plate. In Germany you say “Über den Tellerrand schauen” which translates to “Look over the edge of your plate”, meaning something like “Think outside the box”. That describes the aim of mixing different topics to have (force!) people to not only look at their day by day stuff, but also look left and right. It also is shown in the mix of topics at the event, where quite a lot is about web related stuff (mostly front end or “web design”), but spiced with a lot of interesting and inspiring other stuff too.

### Why Neos Conference? **Neos Con - Reaching beyond yourself** Neos Conference is on a mission to inspire people by demonstrating cutting edge technology, encourage everybody to think “out-of-the-box”, and connecting technological entrepreneurs with enthusiasts. Therefore the conference is for developers, technical leads, CTOs, and everyone who’s willing to learn something new and wants to challenge the status quo! All talks impart sophisticated technology-knowledge about modern concepts, methods and not your average step-by-step online-tutorial to the audience. Neos Con is about the “why” and not about the “what”, it’s about understanding the bigger picture and not the 21st 3-step-manual, it’s about learning something new and sharing knowledge with each other, it’s about growing beyond yourself, it’s about getting inspired, and last but not least, it’s about having fun together. 60% of the talks are about Neos & Flow - obviously, it’s the Neos Con ;-) In addition, 40% are not-Neos-related topics and add deep insights about technology, testing and how to improve your whiteboard skills ;-)The day before the conference there will be a free full-day workshop "Neos from 0 to 100" directly from the Neos core team, where Neos beginners will learn how to implement a project using a real-world example.

Testing is important. This conference is about getting experts and practitioners together to talk, learn and practice the art of testing. We’re looking into advanced new methods into making our testing more effective, as well as enrich our understanding of fundamental methods to grow a stronger community. We’re tired of conferences that feel more like sales pitches than practitioners sharing the craft. Come. Learn. Do. Teach. Test. In case you did not know, we don't make our speakers pay. We reimburse travel and share our profits with them. We believe that allows for a more diverse selection and our programme attests to that. Different people learn in different ways. Conferences are great places to try many styles of learning, great places to connect to other professionals. At the European Testing Conference we have many styles for our sessions. In the beginning of the conference, we have session geared to connect audience with each other. Making the conference more welcoming and less scary place to be. Near the end of the conference we create flexible spaces so you’ll get the last piece of the puzzle ensuring you can take home actionable and relevant insight.

We’re bringing FFS Tech Conf to Australia! FFS Tech Conf is a conference that started in London as a “jokey early morning tweet exchange” and became a one-day single-track conference. The original FFS Tech Conf legends are a group of tech professionals who were a little bit done with the typical conference format. In their own words: “We’ve been dismayed by many recent conferences which seem monopolised by well-meaning and erudite speakers giving convincing presentations on non-controversial subjects, based on opinion rather than experience, delivered to what is effectively an echo chamber of fellow professional presenters and an audience so bamboozled by the intricately constructed arguments that they’re not sure whether or how to challenge what is said.” - [FFS Tech Conf](https://ffstechconf.org/about/) They created a conference where participants could engage in structured rants about their frustration with some of the unnecessary complexity and willful stupidity in software delivery, and where the audience could engage in discussion afterwards. It’s somewhere between an unconf and public forum debate. We were inspired by this concept and watched intently the twitter action from afar. We decided to bring the concept to Australia, and thus, FFS Tech Conf Down Under was born. We aim to adhere to the ethos of the original FFS Tech Conf and have been in touch with the original organising team. We hope to be the catalyst for many other FFS Tech Confs around the world and in the other states of Australia. ## Ethos At its core FFS Tech Conf is a grassroots movement. While presenting a chance for participants to experience catharsis, it is mostly an opportunity to get to the heart of a matter with people who care and have something to contribute. We’re hoping as much as possible to replicate the experience of the London conference, which attracted a diverse set of voices, who normally would not attend conferences, and were energised by the concept of participating FFS Tech Conf. Additionally, like the London conference, we will be running this as a not-for-profit initiative because we see the need and the demand for it rather than for financial reward. We’re looking to run a quality event that supports speakers and audience alike, promoting diversity, inclusion and accessibility. ## Format Sessions at FFS will all have a title beginning with “FFS …” and will consist of a 10-15 minute rant followed by 10-15 minutes for discussion. Sessions last no more than 15 minutes of rant about technology, it's practice or its use (30 minutes of discussion to follow each rant). Additionally, we’ll be opening up the conference to people in technology who have been ‘off the tools’ for a bit, like Product Managers and strategy leads. We’ll be following the programme of the original event, including the amazing lightning/insta rants in the evening.

**NB - As stated in our Directions for Applicants, we can only afford to cover travel within Europe. Apologies if this is unclear.** Monki Gras, the tech conference about Software, Craft, and Tech Culture, returns January 31 and Feb 1st 2019. The theme this year is Accessible Craft: Creating great experiences for everyone. The W3C says Accessibility, User experience and Inclusion are closely related concepts that we should consider together. This seems exactly right, and will form the basis of our conference theme in 2019. This year we want the Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility program to be the conference itself. From accessible web design, to making communities more welcoming and supportive with accessible documentation and codes of conduct, to creating spaces that work well for people with special abilities, to opening up crafts to under-represented groups. Sometimes it’s the small things – like using bigger font sizes as a matter of course in presentations. Sometimes we need fundamentally new design disciplines. As ever, at Monkigras we will “go meta”. We want people to learn from other disciplines. Talks might be on architecture – creating physical spaces that work better for a range of needs. Or technology oriented… Microsoft has been doing amazing work – by designing for people with special needs you create experiences that are better for everybody. How about bootcamps, bringing new people into tech? Good documentation can make an API or service more accessible. Good API design makes your services more accessible to a broad range of developers. We’re supposed to be making life easier, not harder for people, but sometimes (often) in tech we forget that. How can we retrofit legacy services for better accessibility? Or retrofit software? You have to balance a lot of potentially conflicting factors: 1. budget and the art of the possible 2. how does it promote the culture 3. you have to make a moral decision. It’s going to cost me more to retrofit, perhaps in running an event for example you won’t make more profit, but it’s the right thing to do. Accessibility challenges mean supporting edge cases. Take dietary needs for example. You have gluten free, dairy free, halal only, vegetarian, vegan, nut free allergy. All you can really do is do is your best. How can technology help with cost, risk, social and caring. Generally people with accessibility and inclusion needs want to know they’re being heard and considered. Accessibility can be about empathy as much as service or platform design. We want to the event to be as accessible as the theming. We’ll have closed captioning, and we’ll also be paying close attention to the needs of attendees. We are not experts and we will make mistakes, but hopefully you’ll forgive us and help us on our journey to making an argument for a more inclusive industry.

Established for those who value design, New Adventures began as a trilogy of events between 2011–2013, welcoming 650 attendees from across the globe. We're back for 2019 and beyond, as it’s time to explore an uncertain future, together. Tools, frameworks, automation: what value do they offer, and how will they alter the way digital experiences form? Will you be essential or expendable? Did design sleep in while everyone else got busy defining a new rulebook for our industry? We'll talk about designing smarter. We'll consider labour and ethics, education and inclusivity, the disappearance of weirdness and fun. We'll reconvene, recalibrate, and re-energise digital design. Our speakers include Ethan Marcotte, Jeremy Keith, Clare Sutcliffe MBE, Naz Hamid, Helen Joy, and Jessica White, and we have fringe events across three days in the city.

We are excited to announce our 4th year for php[world], the annual conference for PHP developers, with special emphasis on WordPress & Drupal development as well! PHP as a language and a community has been rapidly changing in the last few years. A staggering 83% of the Web runs on PHP, and those websites are built on frameworks such as Drupal, WordPress, Magento, Symfony, ZF and Laravel, each of which has their own strong community. We created a conference designed to appeal to all these communities and bring them together. Hence, php[world] was born. An event intended to bring the entire world of PHP together in one place, to encourage cross-pollination of ideas and sharing of ideals.

Collaboration, openness and transparency are main principles that drive the Open (Source) movement. In order to promote and celebrate this philosophy, we initiated Open Minds - the Austrian Open Source Award & Ball. Meet the Austrian tech scene and learn more about the innovative, educational and social benefits different open initiatives and projects deliver. The <strong>community-driven event is run not-for-profit</strong>, anticipates 200-300 participants and is taking place for the 2nd time. Please note that all organizational work is done by volunteers. The Award show presents and recognizes the outstanding work of Austrian contributors and projects. [beyond tellerrand](https://beyondtellerrand.com) is an independent design and development event established in 2010 and organised by Marc Thiele. Two days with talks about design, technology, development and much more. Plus full-day workshops and (mostly) free Side Events around those dates. Networking is written in big letters as well. beyond tellerrand, the name of my event, is a mix of the English word “beyond” and the German word “Tellerrand”, which is the edge of a plate. ## Line-Up for Berlin 2018: - Andy Budd - Josh Clark - Cécile Dormeau - Chen Hui Jing - Kyle MacDonald - Debbie Millman - Gemma O'Brien - David Ross - Oliver Schöndorfer - Jenny Shen - Frederik Vanhoutte - Leonie Watson - Marcin Wichary

While the necessity and benefits of accessible services on the web are pretty obvious, web accessibility is still not a widespread practice. Common reasonsings range from putative additional efforts, tight budgets to the misbelief that "validity equals accessibilty". In many cases, however, it seems that the majority of developers simply has no clue where to start — which comes as no surprise as most of them have never gotten their hands on assistive technology. ___ The **[Accessibility Club](https://accessibility-club.org)** started out as a tiny meetup back in 2014. The "concept" was more than simple: Take a bunch of webworkers, lock them into one room with a blind person and his screenreader and [see what happens](https://flic.kr/s/aHsjZafYk4). It was instantly clear that there are tons of things the webworkers could and should learn — and the a11yclub became their conversational starting point. In 2016, the Club [went to Berlin](https://flic.kr/s/aHskNj1H7c) for the first time, attracted more than 30 attendees and 2 international presenters. The format shifted towards a mixture of presentations and barcamp style sessions. When in 2017 [Heydon Pickering](http://www.heydonworks.com/), [Laura Kalbag](https://laurakalbag.com/) and [Detlev Fischer](http://www.3needs.org/en/) joined in, a whopping [70 attendees clearly demonstrated](https://flic.kr/s/aHskriq2DU) that awareness has grown and the topic deserves a bigger stage. Other guests presenters so far include [Marco Zehe](https://www.marcozehe.de/), [Kerstin Probiesch](http://www.barrierefreie-informationskultur.de/), [Rodney Rehm](https://rodneyrehm.de/en/), [Marcy Sutton](https://marcysutton.com/) and [Robin Cristopherson](https://www.abilitynet.org.uk/robinchristopherson). ___ For 2018, [Stefan](https://www.stefanjudis.com/) and [Joschi](https://jkphl.is/), the two times Berlin organiser team, decided to take it even one step further: They're excited (and admittedly a bit nervous) to invite you to the first ever full-day **Accessibility Club Conference**, scheduled for **November 5th, 2018**. As with all the smaller gatherings before, the conference wants to give you the chance to get some real-world experience with assistive technology, deepen your knowledge about web accessibilty and get you in touch with like-minded webworkers. The goal is to enable you to make accessibility a natural part of your daily work and mindset. The event in run **not-for-profit**, anticipates **150-200 participants** and is the first internationally oriented conference in the German-speaking area that covers the topic of „web accessibility“. The [Spreespeicher](https://colloq.io/events/accessibility-club/2018/berlin/1/venues/spreespeicher) in Berlin serves as centrally located, well-connected and **structurally fully accessible venue**. Besides the four selected speakers * [Léonie Watson](https://tink.uk/) (The Paciello Group, W3C) * [Raúl Krauthausen](https://raul.de/) (Sozialhelden) * [Charlie Owen](https://sonniesedge.co.uk/) (Springer Nature) * [Alistair Duggin](http://alistairduggin.co.uk/) (Government Digital Service) 4-5 additional speakers will be picked through a public and anonymous [«Call For Papers»](https://colloq.io/events/accessibility-club/2018/berlin/1/callforpapers). Further topic proposals can be submitted here until July 15th. ## We need your help! In order to achieve our goals need your help: * If you think you can **contribute by giving a presentation**, please consider our [call for papers](https://colloq.io/events/accessibility-club/2018/berlin/1/callforpapers)! * If you think you or your employer can **support as a sponsor**, please [get in touch](mailto:hello@a11y-club.org). * In any case you can **help spreading the word** so that all potential attendees, contributors and sponsors take note of this conference. Thanks for your support! ❤️ Joschi & Stefan

FFS Tech Conference was accidentally created by a handful of experienced technologists who have all run conferences in the past. We’ve been dismayed by many recent conferences which seem monopolised by well-meaning and erudite speakers giving convincing presentations on non-controversial subjects, based on opinion rather than experience. Floating the idea on twitter received a massive response in terms of both potential submissions and votes/retweets for those submissions. What we have noticed is that the respondents are a diverse set of voices, who normally would not attend conferences, and appear to be energised by the concept of FFS Tech Conf and are keen to participate. The resulting conference is a single day, single track conference. All sessions topics must start “FFS...” and last no more than 15 minutes of rant about technology, it’s practice or its use (30 minutes of discussion to follow each rant). There will also be a series of lightning rants and an open space in evening for further discussion. For more info see [ffstechconf.org](https://ffstechconf.org)

Hello! Are you - a software engineer who wants to take ownership of your code, understand distributed systems, and solve outages and debug when your code enters the wild? - interested in monitoring and instrumentation, and how observability could bridge the gap between devops and engineering, catalysing a paradigm shift in how our industry approaches software development workflows and tooling? - an observability advocate who has trouble explaining to others what it is or why they should care? - a curious brain who has heard the word “observability” floating around the internet and wants to learn more? If so, we’d absolutely love to have you at **o11ycon**: the first observability conference! It's going to be an interactive day with unconference-style discussions, show-and-tells, and workshops. You don't have to already know what observability is to come to o11ycon.

This polyglot conference is designed to appeal to all developers from the region and covers the topics that you want to hear. The event is designed as a 2-day long, Friday/Saturday event, based on feedback from surveying developers of the region. This year (2018) will be the first year of the event, but we plan to continue hosting the event as an annual conference, with plans to grow into the premiere large developer event of the region.

beyond tellerrand is an independent design and development event established in 2010 and organised by Marc Thiele. Two days with talks about design, technology, development and much more. Networking is written in big letters as well. beyond tellerrand, the name of my event, is a mix of the English word “beyond” and the German word “Tellerrand”, which is the edge of a plate. ## Line-Up for Düsseldorf 2018: - Jared Tarbell - Vic Lee - Lyza Danger Gardner - Claire L Evans - Jens Oliver Meiert - Mike Monteiro - Miriam Suzanne - dina Amin - Jan de Coster - Wes Grubbs - Kate Dawkins … and more TBA

The first symposium of the GEWINN project is dedicated to "Agile Software Development". The event will take place on 21st November 2017 in Berlin from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Agile methods are one of the important recent developments in software engineering. From a gender perspective, the values, principles, roles, practices, and artefacts of agile software development hold great potential to promote gender fairness and equality. But the adoption of agile software development can also jeopardize gender fairness: * The roles in agile methods might unintentionally promote gender stereotypes. * The group empowerment that is central to agile methods might backfire when team diversity is low. * Approaches that have been shown to be successful to consider the wide spectrum of target groups from diverse walks of life might be neglected. The symposium aims at ensuring that the chances of agile software development for a gender-fair working environment can take effect. Researchers and practitioners will meet in order to learn from each other in a participatory exchange of knowledge. We focus on the practical transfer of gender knowledge to computer science and IT companies. At the same time, gender researchers can gain insight into the everyday life of agile software development in the corporate world. You can count on exciting lectures and expert talks on the subject area "Agile". Our workshop sessions offer a chance to discuss the topics with experts in small groups.
